Role Overview:
Aeva is seeking to hire a highly skilled and experienced Lead Lidar and Perception Systems Engineer to join our growing team!  This individual will lead a team of engineers to comprehensively characterize, analyze, verify, and validate Lidar and Perception Software performance across the spectrum of Use Cases, environmental conditions, and potential aggressors.  Responsibilities will include identifying, characterizing, and root causing Lidar point cloud performance impairments, artifacts and deficiencies, as well as leading the verification and validation of a full Perception stack based on the Lidar point cloud outputs, including data collection, curation, ground truth and analysis.  The role also involves directly interfacing with customers regarding performance issues and collaboration with Aeva’s HW and SW engineering development teams to resolve performance issues.

What you'll be doing:

  • Leadership:
  • Manage a team of characterization, test and analysis engineers
  • Interface directly with customers to understand and respond to their product performance concerns
  • Work cross-functionally with Aeva’s HW and SW engineering development teams to propose and implement Lidar point cloud performance as well Perception SW performance improvements and artifact removals
  • Lead the planning and execution of a comprehensive systems level Lidar and Perception characterization, verification and validation efforts
  • Actively participate in product design reviews

  • Lidar and Perception Characterization and Validation:
  • Verify and validate that the Lidar point cloud can meet the capability requirements consistent with customer’s intent
  • Proactively and comprehensively characterize (i.e. test, simulate and analyses) Aeva’s Lidars: per point performance, performance vs. Use Cases, environmental interactions, susceptibility to aggressors, impairments and artifacts
  • Work with the SW teams to enhance and augment the Lidar post point cloud data products such as ego motion estimation, ego motion compensation, on-line calibration, and Perception
  • Characterize, verify and validate the performance of all Aeva data products - e.g. point clouds, intrinsic, extrinsic and on-line calibration, ego motion estimation, motion compensation and perception products
  • Develop, manage and execute processes and assets for data collection, curation, ground truth determination and analysis needed to verify and validate Perception
  • Respond to the Customer’s performance concerns, including replicating, root causing and developing solution roadmaps
  • Develop Aeva vs. competitor comparison analysis, highlighting the benefits and drawbacks of Aeva vs. competitor systems

What you have:

  • Graduate level education and 8 years+ working experience in characterization, testing, simulation, analysis, verification and validation of optical and/or RF sensor systems as well as Perception SW
  • Deep knowledge and experience with systems engineering processes, including SW requirements, development and V&V
  • Strong background and experience in the development, lab level testing and the analysis of optical systems 
  • Experience developing automated test SW, with proficiency in Matlab, Python, C and C++
  • Strong background in digital signal processing and machine vision algorithms including FFTs, Kalman Filters, clustering, classic machine vision and machine learning
  • Excellent written and verbal interpersonal skills
  • Leadership and team management skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects at the same time with proven success in meeting deadlines

Nice to have: 

  • Knowledge of photonics elements and their integration including: PICs - different material platforms, types of lasers, types of optical amplifiers, types of detectors, and free space optics
  • Knowledge and experience with automotive standards
  • Knowledge and experience with reliability and qualification testing                                                    
  • Knowledge and experience with optical, silicon, electrical and mechanical manufacturing processes and testing from wafer level to module level FATP
  • Knowledge and experience developing machine learning algorithms
